Obituary for Charlotte Ann McClurg (Mercer)

Charlotte Ann McClurg, 79, of Greenfield, passed away on the evening of Friday, August 24, 2018, at the Greenfield Healthcare Center.

She was born June 21, 1939 in Anderson, Indiana, a daughter of the late Samuel J. and Thelma (Lee) Mercer.

Charlotte grew up in the small town of Stroh, Indiana, in LaGrange County. She graduated as valedictorian of the 1957 class of Salem Center High School where she was the recipient of the Betty Crocker Homemaking Award. Charlotte graduated from Anderson College in 1961 and received a Master of Business Education Degree from Butler University.

Her first teaching position was at Carthage High School where she taught typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, and all the needed business skills. She was a yearbook sponsor, class sponsor, and willingly served on committees and worked at school events.

It was in Carthage that Charlotte met her future husband, Gary McClurg, whom she married on December 22, 1962 and shared a lifetime of love and devotion. In 1973, Charlotte began teaching at Knightstown High School where she enjoyed a 20-year career in the Business Department teaching accounting and introduction to high school business. She served as co-sponsor of the business club.

Charlotte made an impact on the lives of her many students through the years and was an inspiration to her fellow teachers.

Always an outstanding hostess, Charlotte entertained family and friends with an array of beautiful and delicious meals and made wonderful memories in each place they lived - Knightstown, Carthage, Greenfield, on Little Fox Lake in Brown County and then back in Greenfield.

Charlotte was loved by her family and known as “Aunt Lala” by her nieces and nephews.

For many years, Charlotte and Gary spent winters in Orange Beach, Alabama, enjoying the sunshine and sharing fun with their “Snowbird Friends.”

As a couple, Gary and Charlotte were blessed to enjoy many cruises and trips in the U.S.A. and around the world. Where ever they went they were loved and appreciated. “Aunt Lala” was much-loved and led a good life.

Those left to cherish Charlotte’s memory, include her husband of 55 years, Gary A. McClurg; two brothers, Thomas L. (Claire) Mercer of Carthage and Larry J. (Patricia) Mercer of Alexandria and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of dear friends.

Charlotte was preceded in death by an infant brother, Ronald Mercer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at Heritage Funeral Care in Knightstown with Pastor Jim McClurg officiating. Burial will follow in Carthage Town Cemetery.
