Obituary for Elizabeth J. "Betty" Cobbs

Elizabeth J. "Betty"  Cobbs
Dr. Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Cobbs, 65, of Knightstown, Indiana, died unexpectedly on Sunday, September 2, 2018 in Sioux City, Iowa, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was born on February 7, 1953 in Buffalo, New York, a daughter of the late Walter H. Cobbs, Jr. and Jean (Delaney) Cobbs.

Betty earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from Bryn Mawr College before studying medicine at Temple Medical School and her residency was at the IU School of Medicine. She specialized in internal medicine and pediatrics and practiced at Eskenazi Health-Indianapolis and Indiana University Health North Hospital.

She was a long-time faculty member in both pediatrics and internal medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Cobbs was passionate about providing excellent care to her patients and was the consummate educator who generously taught residents and medical students for nearly a quarter century.

Betty enjoyed her farm, horses, trail riding and her cats. She liked spending time with her friends and traveling. She was a member of the Indiana Horse Council and looked forward to the Hoosier Horse Fair every year. Betty had a heart for helping children and was a central figure in the recent founding of The Harbor, in Knightstown, for families in crisis. She was an active member of Walnut Ridge Friends Meeting.

Those left to cherish Betty’s memory include her brother, Walter H. (wife: Mary Jane) Cobbs, M.D. of Narberth, PA; two sisters, Susan (husband: Richard) Proctor of Port Washington, WI, and Louise Cobbs, of Pottstown, PA and several nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by her close adoptive family, Michael and Melinda Gerrish of Shirley, John and Sedda Wagner of Knightstown, Michael, Ashlie, Rose and Aubrie Gerrish of Knightstown, Jennifer, Jeremy, Alisa, Kegan and Kinsley Marlatt of Lewisville, Bob and Caroline Gotwals of Rushville, Shawn, Michelle, Michaela and Macy Orme of Arlington, and Eric, Kim, Elizabeth and Ethan Gotwals of Yorktown.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by a cousin, Margaret Ryther;

Visitation will be Friday, September 14, 2018 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Care, 34 West Main Street in Knightstown.

The funeral will be Saturday, September 15, at 11 a.m., at Walnut Ridge Friends Meeting, 8956 West 800 North in Carthage, with Pastor Markus Dennis officiating. Burial will follow in Walnut Ridge Friends Meeting Cemetery.
